Blind Bike Trials Rider, Matt Gilman —
I am blind. I became blind due to diabetes. I have had 22 eye surgeries in 2 years. In 2004 I noticed my vision becoming blurry. I went to an eye doctor thinking that I would need glasses. They quickly realized that it was much more then that. They told me that I would need to see a specialist and that I would need surgery. With this news I was devastated. So after many eye surgeries and a few retina detachments, I am left almost completely blind. I can only see a very little bit out of my right eye. My left eye had such a bad retina tear that i have no vision there. In my right eye I have a silicone oil in place as well as a replaced lens that has a fiber growth on it. My cornia is starting to get a milky substance on it. All of these things are blocking my vision. I may have another surgery to clean up some of the issues but it won't give me back much vision unless they can take out the oil. It is like looking through a bottle of olive oil with Vaseline smeared all over. That is the best way I can describe it. The oil is there to stop blood vessel growth on and around the retina. These are blood vessels that shouldn't be growing there and end up pulling on the retina and tear it. this condition is called diabetic retina-opathy. So if you know someone in my same situation please pass this along with my video, to show what can still be done with little to no vision. Yes I do ride a bike. Ask me about it.
